Breakups are one of the most difficult things we have to go through, even if the decision was a mutual one. But the worst ones are the ones we don’t see coming, the ones that shock us so much that we’re left speechless when it happens. And no one knows it better than the men and women in our stories today.
They’ve had some heartbreaks so bad that they’re worthy of a Taylor Swift song. Their exes cheated, betrayed them, put them down and hurt them. And if you’d like to find out how it was done, all you need to do is keep reading.
41. The Worst of the Worst
My ex cheated on me with another guy. And being as blinded by love as I was, I told him I’d take him back. Apparently, people that had seen them together talked and he went ahead and blamed it all on me. He made sure to make me look like the bad one when, in fact, I was the only one on his side. After all this he said/she said crap, I told him, “If you love me, let’s make this work.” His response? “You’re so immature.” I was so hurt.
What hurt me to my core was that a week before this went down, he had come to talk to my dad to ask for my hand in marriage. Two weeks after the “you’re so immature” conversation, I found out he had been engaged the entire time he was dating me. His fiancée just happened to live in Colorado. Less than a year later, they got married. It took me years to move on.
40. Deserved What She Got
I got suspicious when she started to get really distant around me. When she broke up with me, I decided to investigate; she told me her Facebook password two years earlier when she said she had nothing to hide from me. Her phone was clean because all the lovey-dovey stuff and meet up plans were on Facebook messenger and had been happening for the past three months. I told a shared friend what I found and the shared friend (who already knew about it) informed the recent ex of my findings.
Hell hath no fury like that of a super defensive girl who just got her secret exposed. She couldn’t believe that I remembered the password from a conversation that long ago and was insistent that I maliciously hacked into Facebook’s servers using some coding voodoo because I am a programmer. I informed her other boyfriend that I existed and he dumped her immediately and shared her habit on social media.
39. Not Enough of the Ex
Sixteen hours after the guy I was in love with for two years finally asked me to be his girlfriend, he changed his mind. You have no idea how confused I was when he broke the news to me.
When I understood what he wanted to do (c’mon people, I’d waited two years for this), I asked why he wanted to end it. Apparently, I “didn’t remind him of his ex enough.”
38. The Breakup Song
My girlfriend of a year broke up with me by sending a video of herself singing a break-up SONG that she wrote. It included a background dancer who also happened to be one of my good friends.
I was at a party at the time she sent it and I foolishly played it aloud so all my good pals could hear it. They heard my heartbreak. It was definitely the worst heartbreak ever.
37. The Best Big Brother Ever
My sister got broken up with in her birthday card. Yes, that’s right, her ex gave her a birthday card in which he wrote: “I want to break up.”
It happened while we were in middle school. I ended up telling our older brother who was in high school since my sister was too heartbroken to talk. Later that day, our brother and I pushed the guy around a bit.
36. Yahoo Chat, Of All Things
I took my ex to a club and she left with a friend of a friend. Years later, we decided to give it another go; we lived together, the whole nine yards. Eventually, we ended up engaged and she said she didn’t want to do anything intimate till we were married.
I was fine with that, until she cheated on me with some random dude from Yahoo chat. I called her up and said, “you have a half hour to get your stuff and get out.” I haven’t spoken to her since, and this was in 2004. I am now happily married (to someone else) and just celebrated my ten year anniversary.
35. Hanging His Heart
I was in a relationship with a guy who loved playing hangman with me. He loves it so much that he decided to break up with me during one of our games. “I want to be single” was the phrase that I had to guess.
I was so excited to beat him at it (it was the tie-breaker). When I figured it out and looked at him to explain, he said it was what he wanted. Needless to say, I cried while walking three miles home.
34. An Email And A Movie
Breaking up through email was bad enough, but the worst goes to my ex, who told me to watch a movie to understand why she was breaking up with me.
Out of curiosity, I did end up watching the first five minutes of the movie. I ended up getting annoyed and turned it off. And this was on my birthday too.
33. Absolutely Heartless
Two o’clock in the morning, my ex rolled over and said he wasn’t happy anymore. He proceeded to wake up, get dressed and take me home just like that. I was staying at his place because I had no method of transportation to work in the morning and he lived within walking distance.
We didn’t end up back at my place until three in the morning. I was in so much shock, I just followed his instructions; I went to bed until 5, walked the 3 hours to work and tried to continue with a regular work day. I ended up having a breakdown at lunch with a coworker and took the rest of the day off. It was the worst breakup ever.
32. It Wasn’t Actually A Robbery
I was 21, came home from work and everything was gone. She left a milk crate, the tiny TV, a trash can, and the box spring to the mattress. I didn’t actually know that she left me, so I called the cops and told them that someone stole everything, including my girlfriend.
I was pretty hysterical, but the 911 operator was able to calm me down and inform me that my girlfriend most likely left me. I felt like a complete fool after.
31. During the Act
A month into a relationship, my ex broke up with me in the middle of intercourse. Then he told me not to cry because I was a beautiful person.
I ran into the bathroom as gracefully as I could and did not come out until he left my house. I could not believe what had happened to me.
30. Right Before the Test
I had a pretty important test in school and my ex decided to end it right before I went in. It really messed me up and I failed the test.
Looking back, it was probably a good thing that we ended the way we did because I was starting to fall really hard for this girl. The bad part was that I knew she did it on purpose.
29. Brotherly Love
After three years, my girlfriend decided to tell me that the only reason she was with me was because she loved my older brother and wanted to come over to see him.
My brother had no idea and was just as pissed as I was. That day, I learned how loyal was brother was and how loyal my ex was not.
28. Grandma and A Baby
We had been dating for two and a half years. I bought a plane ticket to Seattle for him (we lived in NY), so he could go visit his family because he hadn’t seen them in a while. A week into the trip, he said he was going to stay another for another two weeks because his grandma wasn’t doing well.
Two weeks turned into a phone call while I was at work (taking care of a special needs girl), saying he got someone pregnant and was not coming back.
27. He Didn’t Even Have the Decency…
My ex walked out on me while I was in the shower. One minute were hanging on the couch, happy as can be. Next minute I jumped in the shower and I never saw or heard from him again. He even blocked my number and told his relatives and friends not to talk to me.
The only reason I know he’s alive is because one of his decent friends thought it was cruel and decided to tell me about it. Go to hell, Mike!
26. With Benefits?
On our three year anniversary, he told me, “Here are your anniversary presents, and by the way, we’re over.” I was so shocked that I just stood there for a good five minutes.
A few minutes later, he then said something even crazier than his stupid anniversary/breakup comment. He said to me, “Can we still be friends? With benefits?”
25. As Brutal As It Gets
My ex broke up with me without a word. There were no calls, no text messages, nothing… and it all happened while I was in the hospital for emergency surgery.
When I was fully recovered and got back to work (we met as co-workers), he was dating another girl we worked with. I can’t begin to explain how awkward the entire thing was.
24. Two Breakups In A Day
Back in college, I had a girlfriend break up with me through my therapist. I came to therapy and was told by the therapist that my girlfriend didn’t want to see me anymore.
I told the therapist how unprofessional this was and then broke up with my therapist. I mean, what kind of therapist does something like that. Am I your client or was she?
23. A Disgusting Lie
My ex dumped me by saying she was going to a special treatment center for an eating disorder. I felt really bad for her because I had no idea that she struggled with something so serious during the course of our relationship.
Instead, she hooked up with my best friend. To this day I could not understand why someone would lie about something like that. I still hate both of them today.
22. Right In His Face
I was with one girl for almost six months who broke up with me in a very weird and disrespectful way. She chose to end it by making out with another guy right in front of me at a club.
I’m pretty sure she made sure I saw it because she was too scared to break up with me like a decent person. I never talked to her again after that.
21. Disney Heartbreak
I lived in MA when I was 15 and my dream, at the time, was to go to Disney World. My boyfriend was going to Florida with his family for a week and they invited me to go with them. It was the most magical time. In my head, everything was going so perfectly- I got to go to my dream place with my first love. I fell in love with him so fast and so hard. His family loved me, my family loved him and it seemed so right!
The day we got back from this amazing vacation, he broke up with me…through email! I asked him why and never got a response, ever. He could’ve at least waited a week after coming back! Way to break a young girl’s heart. But there is a happy ending to this story: now I’m happily married and live in Orlando. I can go to Disney World with the hubby anytime I want!
20. The D-Bag-Free Vacation
My now ex-boyfriend stole the money I thought we’d been saving for a vacation and ditched me the night before our anniversary. Three months of taking extra shifts went to waste, as well as a three-year relationship.
Screw him though; this all happened two weeks ago and I’ve already started saving up for my own, idiot-free vacation. It’s going to be the best time of my life!
19. It Was All A Lie
I was dating this girl for a couple of months and one day, out of nowhere, she told me she was getting married. Apparently, she was in a sub/dom relationship of some sort and she was told to date someone ugly to humiliate herself.
I don’t think I am ugly, but that certainly took the wind out of my sails for a bit. My confidence is back now, but back then, I almost started to believe that I was truly unattractive.
18. Using Me for Lab Reports
My ex dumped me the day before finals week. I found out later through mutual friends he was using me for someone to hook up with and for help on lab reports.
He definitely had some insecurity issues with me because he was used to being the “smarter” one in relationships. But I can’t get over the fact that he tried to sabotage me by dumping me the day before finals. I did nothing to deserve it, but the Joke was on him; it was a straight-A semester for me.
17. You’re What?
We were in a relationship for 13 months and were in the middle of making love when she just stopped, got off, and said “I think I’m asexual” and left.
She moved to Texas later; it confused the hell out of me. When I looked her up a few months later, she had shaved all her hair off and joined a heavy metal band.
16. You Know That Thing?
I had two exes who taught me how silly and idiotic guys could be. You know that thing men do sometimes where they want to break up, but they don’t want to do it?
So, they just start being mean, so you break up with them? Yes, that’s what happened to me, twice. Looking back, they were two of the most immature guys I’ve ever dated.
15. A Close Call
My ex called me from her new boyfriend’s car to tell me it was over. I knew this particular bit of information because she chose that very moment to let me know she was in a new relationship already.
Where was I, you ask? I was ring shopping in Zales, holding the ring she wanted. I’m so damn glad I didn’t marry that woman.
14. Pre-Teen Drama
I was 12 and my little 12-year-old “boyfriend” told me over the phone that he just wasn’t ready to have a girlfriend. I got a call a few seconds later after hanging up, “Hey, I broke up with her for you baby.” I was confused.
He was confused and so was I, because why would he be calling me baby and telling me about another breakup when he’d just done it to me? It turns out, he called the wrong girl and thought I was the new girlfriend. What an idiot!
13. There Are No Words
After dating a guy (on and off) from the age of 15 to 19, I found out I was pregnant. I didn’t exactly know how to feel because I was so young, but I was in love and figured this might be a good thing. So, I called my boyfriend.
He hung up on me and changed his phone number. That was probably the most hurtful way I’ve been dumped. But I learned a lot from this and now, I’m in a happy, healthy relationship.
12. Feeling the After Effects
My ex left me for my best friend who “needed her more than I did,” then in an effort to feel less guilty, told me I was an awful boyfriend and that everything was my fault and we could have been happy if I was better.
I don’t think she understood how much she hurt me. I understand her wanting to leave by why did she have to shatter my self-esteem in the process; to this day I’m still depressed and lonely.
11. He Just Left…
I was in a relationship for about three years before the unexpected happened. My ex just abandoned me. Without any words. Without any explanation. No warning. No answers.
One day I’m excitedly planning a future with my husband, the next day he’s just gone. He just cut all contact. In my opinion, it doesn’t get much worse than that.
10. Caring for the Sick
One day, I was laying down in bed when my girlfriend came storming into the room and told me it wasn’t working out and that we were over before running out the room crying.
I lay there stunned, unable to run after her due to the tubes in my chest. Yes, I was in the hospital. My first stay in the hospital, she came and dumped me.
9. More Macho
I was with my ex for two years before my gut told me that something was extremely wrong; she ended up leaving me for the “don’t worry, we’re just friends” guy.
She said, “You are so much more handsome, but he’s just more macho.” I had no idea what to say so I just walked away and left her to her new macho man.
8. Christmas in Virginia
This was Christmas of 2014. It was a long distance relationship where my ex would drive out to see me. It was December 23rd and I was flying back to Virginia to visit family. She was with me for the week, then took me to the airport and drove home. When we got out of the car, I told her I loved her and she said it back, we kissed, hugged, made love, then I left. I landed in Virginia and got a text from her saying it was over because my dad makes a lot of money and we just grew up in two different worlds.
Fast forward to Christmas 2015. I’m with a girl who lives five miles away from me. I just had a gut feeling things were going to end while I was in Virginia for the holidays. The day after Christmas, she broke up with me. I’ve learned one lesson from this, don’t go to Virginia for Christmas.
7. Caught Red- Handed
My ex and I were together for almost a year before I started to feel like things weren’t exactly the best. When she was being a little weird when I asked if she wanted to hang out, she said no, that she was busy.
I didn’t think much of it until I went to hang with my friends instead, and we went to the movies and saw her there with another guy.
6. Back to His Country
A girl I know married a guy from another continent. They’d been living together for a few months when she came home from work one day to find all his belongings gone.
She couldn’t figure out what happened to him so eventually called the police. They investigated and informed her that he’d boarded a flight back to his native country.
5. They Were Dry
Four weeks before our wedding, I had to do the breaking up for him because he just sat there hanging his head, not saying anything, but “I’m sorry.”
Occasionally he wiped his eyes as if he was crying, but his eyes were totally dry. I couldn’t believe that he’d try to insult me like this after not being man enough to break up with me properly.
4. Who Am I Speaking To?
My girlfriend and I were together for about a year and a half. It was the summer and my family and I went to Florida like we usually do for a few weeks. I came back early from vacation and called my girlfriend.
Some guy answered the phone. After he realized that he was talking to “the boyfriend,” he hung up and she never called back. Neither did I.
3. His Stupid Logic
My ex told me he knew before we got married that it wouldn’t work out. I stood there completely dumbfounded for more than a few seconds and when I regained my composure, I asked him one question.
I asked him why he didn’t call off the wedding, and he said: “c’ mon… you wouldn’t be able to handle that.” Oh, that’s right, because being in a dead, loveless marriage for two years was so much easier to handle.
2. Why Bother?
I was in a relationship for about five years. While it wasn’t exactly perfect, to me, at least, it was one of the best I’d ever have. But it seems that my ex wasn’t happy, so when she wanted to end things, she didn’t even bother to tell me.
She just grew increasingly distant and eventually just completely stopped talking to me. It happened over a period of a few months and I was completely blindsided when it happened.
1. Broke Up with Dad
My ex had her step sister call my parents phone (didn’t have a cell phone then) to break up with me. Except my dad answered, so she told him it was over.
He simply said, “I think you want to talk to my son.” She was extremely embarrassed that she broke up with my dad instead of me. Looking back, I think it’s hilarious.
