Have you ever been sleeping peacefully in a hotel bed only to be startled awake at 2am to find the maintenance man standing over you with a 1,000 mile stare in his eyes? Have you ever been walking down a dimly lit hotel hallway and seen an odd shape out of the corner of your eye that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up?
Hotels have frequently been the setting for some some of the creepiest stories ever told. So we’ve compiled the top 50 creepiest, true hotel stories as told first hand, by the travelers themselves. Warning, you might not want to read this alone in bed at night!

1. The Stalker Wants to Show Up
My mom was traveling for work and sat next to a man (fellow business traveler) on the plane. They had a casual conversation and exchanged business cards. Later that evening she’s in her hotel watching TV and gets a phone call from the front desk that her husband is here and they want to know if they can give him a key to the room.
Turns out the creep on the plane was pretending to be her husband to try to get into her room.
2. The Cleaning Guy Wants to Show Up, too!
We went on a family vacation to DC and my stepdad rented us the cheapest hotel he could find. All was well until the final day. There’s literally no other guests as we’re checking out. My mom came into my room, solo, to ask how I was doing, do I need help, etc. From behind us, the door opens very slowly and the cleaning guy snuck inside holding a key card. Except he came face to face with my two brothers and me. He quickly bolted out the door.
Mom said she had told him good morning as she walked into the room. He knew she was alone, and knew the room was now occupied. He just didn’t take into consideration the rest of us were there.
3. The Secret Door and His Smile
Stayed in a B&B in Pennsylvania that seemed cute enough. They did have a wall of antique dolls in the main room but otherwise no signs of weirdness. That’s until we were settled in the room. I noticed some scratches on the floor near a bookcase and after some inspection realized it was a secret door. When I asked the owner, who gave a creepy vibe if it worked he said yes and showed me that it opened to their office (which was a cluttered room with a computer and piles). It had a lock on their side and when I asked if there was a lock on my side he smiled and said “No”.
When I showed some concern that there was an unlockable entrance to my room that was camouflaged that they didn’t tell me about he just kept smiling.
4. Mr. “Standing in the Dark”
My girlfriend works as a TV commercials producer and often travels to South America (mainly Argentina). One night, she woke up at around 3 AM to find a male hotel employee standing at the foot of her bed staring at her.
When they checked the CCTV, he had been doing it for hours that night and for the previous three nights.
5. The Mr. Mime
I once stayed in a B&B which had a shared bathroom. The first night I got up at probably like 2 am and I was bursting for a pee. The bathroom was down the hallway, not too far but seemed like such an effort in my tired state. I get to the bathroom and open the door and there was this guy just standing in the bathroom, dressed head to toe in a mime costume, face painted and everything. He was squatted down on the floor but his trousers were still up.
I looked at him for a second, he gave me a wave with a smile and began just silently pushing. I just ran back to my room, locked the door and decided to pee in a bottle. I’m still not sure if I was just really tired and seeing things or something, it’s seriously the strangest thing I’ve ever seen.
6. The “Locked Up” Guy
Checked into a hotel on vacation. Everything was going okay. I woke up one night to the erratic movement of the door handle as if someone was trying to get in or break the door down. Always happened in the dead of the night when in deep sleep. As soon as I woke up it would stop.
I spoke to a hotel manager about it and he told me it was a patient who was recently released from a mental institute who does this as he still thinks he is locked up in the institute. A combination of not taking his medication and sleepwalking makes his randomly try and kick doors down within the hotel. The family was very wealthy and connected and the manager didn’t want to kick up a fuss for chucking out someone who can shut his business down very quickly. I left after a week because it got worse.
7. The Uninvited Guest
My spouse and I stayed at a massive hotel complex which consisted of one hotel that bought almost every other hotel around it. We bought the online special and were put in one of the ancient acquisitions. There was this odd 4×4 piece of plywood that was hanging down from the ceiling just enough so it felt like someone could watch you through the crack but you couldn’t see in it. We hung up the do not disturb sign and went to tourist around.
When we came back, the TV was on at maximum volume. We left and returned again and the shower curtain had fallen down. Good thing it was only a one night stay. That room just had the feeling of someone there.
8. The Smoky Room
I had to stay in a hotel overnight to take a class in the morning and was super sleepy. The room smelled like smoke when I arrived, and I promptly called the front desk to tell them about it and that it wasn’t me. Being as tired as I was, I climbed into the stained duvet and felt something cylindrical and small at my feet. I thought it was a pen, and since I was practically asleep, I was like, cool, I need a pen in the morning anyway.
So, I woke up, got ready, and remembered the pen. I pulled the sheets back and it was a CR@CK PIPE. I was refunded everything for the room. The housekeeper was probably fired.
9. The Creepiest I’ve Ever Seen!
Went to a hotel and arrived at night, me and my brother went to check out the pool and whatnot and he started to chase me pretending to throw me into the pool, so I freaked out and ran to our room, my brother was like “Noooo that’s not our room” and I busted in (the room was either open or unlocked because it was just sliding doors or something because it was in the islands) and saw two people “making love”, they sorta froze seeing a little 5-year-old boy stare at and nope right outta there.
To that poor couple I accidentally interrupted, I’m so sorry. I legit thought it was my room and didn’t mean to intrude I hope I didn’t ruin your night.
10. The All-Around Man
A little hotel in London, I remember it being a couple of blocks away from King’s Cross. We got there late and there was only a reception guy, he told us about breakfast and internet services, etc. “You can come back upstairs around 8 and the guy in charge of the Internet café will be back.” “The cook starts serving breakfast at 6.” “The cleaning crew usually start cleaning rooms at 10.” Things like that.
The creepy part? He was the only employee there. He was the cook, and the cleaning guy, and the one in charge of the computers but he has different personalities for each and spoke of “the others” in the third person. We only stayed there for a couple of nights and we were never really sure if he was crazy or just being funny.
11. A locked up Pianist
I was staying at a little hotel in Bisbee, Arizona which is practically a ghost town. The hotel had a pretty grand entryway with a marble staircase and there is a chip in the staircase that they claim came from Pancho Villa riding his horse through the hotel back in the day. Anyways, one night while I was there I woke up very early for some reason and I heard the faint sound of a piano so I decided to investigate because I didn’t remember a piano in the lobby of this place. I went downstairs to the lobby and I couldn’t hear it anymore.
I wandered back up the stairs to my floor and followed the sound down a dark hallway and it got louder as I got closer to the end so I knew I was on the right track. At the end of the hallway, there was a door and I put my ear to it and could hear the piano coming from behind the door. It wouldn’t have been all that creepy had the door not been padlocked shut.
12. The Knocking Fart
I was visiting Taipei with my family. In the dead of night, I woke up to the sound of knocking. But it wasn’t coming from our door, it was coming from the direction of the windows. There were no balconies for a person to stand on, just normal windows, which meant that someone knocking on that fifth-floor window was impossible. And yet, the window-knocking persisted. Mind racing, I wondered what inhuman, unnatural entity was there, just on the other side of the window. I was too terrified to move.
It took all of my strength to whisper to my parents who were on the next bed over. “Do you hear that?” They woke up, and I repeated my question, my voice hoarse with dread. I didn’t dare look in their direction, as their bed was closer to the window — and the unholy knocking. My parents laughed. The knocking sound had been my mother farting in her sleep.
13. The White Lady
I was in a hostel in Vancouver and was settling in when my bunkmate arrived. She was an older, Aussie woman in her late 50’s/early ’60s from Melbourne doing some world solo travel (she alluded to “being alone now”). She asked me about NYC and answered almost everything that I told her with a subdued, almost whispery “that’s amazing.”
In bed later that night, I turn over in bed away from the wall and see her standing by my rail with the moon from the window pouring over her. She’s wearing a long, white nightgown and her hair is in a disarray, almost glowing and she’s staring at me. Her face is at an angle so half of it is in shadow and she whispers “that’s amazing” and then goes back to sleep.
14. The Strange Knock
I went to Birmingham one night and stayed in a cheap hotel. My room had no Windows. At about 2 AM I woke up to someone knocking on my door claiming to be hotel staff. I stayed silent in bed as they said “Excuse me?? Are you okay? We heard you screaming and wanted to check on you”. I ignored him and went back to sleep. At 5 AM the same guy and a lady started banging on my door telling me to open up as I phoned them for help. I didn’t. I stayed in bed.
When I got up in the morning to check out, I inquired at the desk about why they had tried knocking on my door. It was 2 men at the desk and they said they had been on duty all night and no one had sent anyone to my room during the night. I will never stay in that hotel again.
15. Footsteps from Above
I was staying in a fairly old hotel alone for one night, trying to go to sleep. However, I could clearly hear footsteps from the room above me. And it sounded like high heel shoes so it was noisy enough to bother me. I remember lying there thinking “Who the f- is walking back and forth, back and forth in their room at this time?”
I eventually fell asleep anyway and the next morning it was all silent. I packed my stuff and entered the elevator only to find out my floor (the 4th) was the top floor. I looked at the hotel from the outside and sure enough, I could spot my room and there was nothing but the flat roof above it (it was a small hotel). To this day I can’t really explain it.
16. The Loud Noises from the Empty Room
One night, we decided to stay in after going out all week during our stay in Amsterdam. We were just watching some cartoons and eating Chinese takeouts then we heard loud bangs, scratching, and blood-churning screams from the room next to ours. We thought maybe someone was hurt or fighting someone else so we went down to the lobby immediately to make a report to the night manager. You should’ve seen his face when we first told him— he went completely pale like he had just seen a ghost.
Turned out someone else from the floor below that room made the same compliant so they checked it out. The room was completely empty. We got to see it for ourselves too and it looks like no one was staying there – No mess or wrecked furniture. Lucky it was our last night as we checked out the very next day. Really creepy.
17. A Strange Smoke from Cabinet
My friends and I were staying on the haunted floor of the Alex Johnson Hotel in the Black Hills, obviously trying to see or hear something. About 1 am we get tired and call it a night since nothing exciting had happened yet. While we’re trying to sleep, the cabinet near the TV keeps opening and closing on its own every few minutes.
So my friend took a picture once when it opened and the photo showed this dense white smoke that looked like it was leaving or entering the cabinet. We got what we wanted but didn’t sleep great after that.
18. The Unknown Call and Noise
At maybe 11 pm or so, I get a call from the motel phone saying there’s been a complaint about noise. I told them that’s impossible, I’ve been sleeping. They ask me if maybe it’s someone else in the room and I tell them nope, I’m here alone so there’s definitely no one else making noise. They ask me again if I’m sure I’m by myself and not causing any noise. I say yes again. Fall back asleep immediately.
When I woke up and thought about it some more, I realize how weird the entire interaction was. There was absolutely no noise I could hear anywhere nearby and I don’t know why the motel staff would need to clarify so many times that I was alone. Apparently, they never called. So I assume it must’ve been someone calling the different rooms to see who was in the rooms and how many people. I’ve never been so glad to always use the extra latch chain lock.
19. A Lovely Lady yet Creepy
A friend and I once stayed at a pretty fancy B&B for the night. The lady who owned it was absolutely lovely, but would appear out of nowhere. We’d be sitting alone in a large room with one doorway and suddenly she was in the room with us. Either this joint had secret doors or something really creepy was going on. She seemed to know things that we’d said or done as well.
The thing that tripped us out the most was hearing someone trying to open our door during the night. She was super lovely and the building was beautiful, but we were relieved to check out the next morning!
20. The Vanishing Man
I was staying in Birmingham, AL at a Hyatt. One night around 2 AM I woke up to a man screaming. Like stabbed in the heart scream. I sat there in a panic, wondering if I should call someone, but when I didn’t hear anything else I chalked it up to a dream.
The next night I woke up around 3 AM and had this horrible feeling that someone was in my room. I rolled over and there was an old man, sitting on the Air-con (it was boxed in), smoking, looking away from me. I stared at him for a few seconds and he turned to look at me. So I shot up out of bed, ready to run, and no one was there.
21. Who was the Real?
A small group of us were staying at a hotel- 4 guys and a girl. The girl had her own room, and us guys were sharing a room with 2 beds. I was messing with the girl, telling her the hotel was haunted and even photoshopped an article about a haunted room to have our hotel name and her room number on it.
Karma hit me real good though. I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and the guy I was sharing a bed with was deep in sleep snoring. When I got to the bathroom though, someone was in there and I swear the voice was the same as the guy asleep in my bed. Confused, I bolted back to the room where all 3 other guys were still asleep. I didn’t know what to do so I just laid back in bed awake all night terrified waiting to die.
22. But… She’s not Hospitable
We stayed in a B&B. It was owned by a couple. The bedrooms were extremely well done and beautiful, but on everything, there were signs to not “touch”. To use the shower, you would have to ask the couple and the Internet ended at 11 PM. The woman would also check on everyone at random times in the night, we would hear creeping in the hallway to make sure “everyone was sleeping” and not doing any illegal things like using the Internet.
When we checked out of her B&B, she came into our room and said that we “stunk”, and opened the window to prove this and demanded money immediately. Another traveler was kicked out of the B&B because the checkout time was 10 AM, and they were forced to stand outside (she wouldn’t even let them stay inside) in the thunderstorm while their taxi came. Another traveler had to go a check (we were in an isolated place) to pay for the room and she took their bags and wouldn’t give them back. But on the way out, she asked everyone if they enjoyed their stay!
23. Mom’s Doppelganger
My family stayed in a famously haunted hotel in New Zealand when I was about 6. I didn’t notice anything creepy and neither did my brother or my mom, but my dad said that while he was in the bathroom he could hear someone moving around in my mom and his room and when he called out to ask what she was looking for there was no reply. He just figured it was mom but then when he walked back in she wasn’t in there and had been reading a story to my brother and me for about 10 minutes.
Afterwards, we asked the front desk if maybe there had been some housekeeping or something but they said that housekeeping is only in the mornings.
24. The Haunted Floor
I was in Japan staying at a hotel that a supplier had put us up at. The floor I was staying on had a weird vibe and I noticed that I got strange looks from people every time I got on the elevator, but just chalked that up to being a foreigner. The first morning the supplier rep met me after breakfast and asked how I liked the place and which floor I was on etc. Do I told him what floor. He got a surprised look on his face and asked if I had seen or heard anything strange. I said not really that I noticed but why did you ask? He said someone committed suicide on that floor a couple of years before and everyone believed it was haunted.
In fact, the elevator always stopped on that floor whether anyone pushed the button or not. After he told me this, I did start listening and looking and I did hear some strange noises considering the floor was basically empty except for me. None of the Japanese would let themselves be booked on the floor because of the ghost. Spooky.
25. Who was number FOUR?
Two friends and I stayed in a hotel in Sapporo. It was part of a large franchise, all very standard, no funny business. On the first night, I went to bed last, my friends were already asleep. I closed my eyes, just listening to how the breathing of people sleeping gets really loud in a quiet room. There were four sets of breathing, including mine. Counted again, and again, four sets, mine, my two friends, and some… thing? someone? else.
This repeated every night for the four nights we stayed there, and in my culture, we don’t mention the supernatural in case they notice we notice them, so I suffered those nights alone.
26. Mother and Child
Me and the fiancée once stayed the night in the grand hotel in Torquay. For those who don’t know, Grand hotels in the UK are marvelous Old Victorian buildings which sadly (particular in old seaside towns) tend to have seen better days. Well anyway, we were having a ball getting money drunk amongst the old folks who still love to spend their weeks in such places, particularly in the very attractive Art Deco bar.
Everything was super until we tried to sleep that night. My Fiancee was first, claiming that a little girl came into our room and started tugging on her hand, and I later that same night awoke screaming convinced that a Woman had burst into the room in a state of undress screaming for help! Let’s just say we left in a hurry, and when leaving I asked: “has anyone ever said this hotel is haunted.” To which the receptionist replied sheepishly very much in the affirmative! 10/10 wouldn’t go again.
27. The Ghost Poop
Kind of creepy but also really gross. We got to our hotel and the rest of the room was clean but the toilet was filled to the top with poop. Like more than a normal human being could drop in one trip. We reported it to the staff, and they checked who was the last one to enter the room.
Turned out it was from a disgruntled employee who decided to leave his mark, and he went to the room 3 days straight to plant his turds inside and we were the lucky ones. We were thoroughly disgusted and got a free night. We even got moved to another room because the smell was so bad even after it was cleaned.
28. The Missing Old Guy
I was staying at a hotel in Detroit. I needed to do my laundry and it was a really long hotel. One of those motel properties converted into better hotels. I walked out looking for the laundry room along a long corridor with a repeating pattern carpet. And it just felt weird. I found the laundry room at the end of the corridor and there was an old guy sitting outside and I went into the laundry room. As soon as I got in, I realized I had no quarters and maybe 5 seconds after entering I came out to check with the old dude and he wasn’t there anymore. Almost vanished into thin air.
There was no place to go, maybe one of the rooms in the hotel but I never heard a door open and close. It was super weird. I ran back to my room and stayed in until early morning when I checked out.
29. Sleepwalking on a Roof
I spent a night in a hotel at Kanchanaburi (Thailand). I woke up in the middle of the night to find myself alone on the rooftop. My room was on the second floor. Apparently, I had sleepwalked out of my room, somehow got up to the 5th floor. Climbed up the ladder and pushed open the trap door leading to the rooftop.
I was weird because I have never sleepwalked before that and never again after that incident. Asked the front desk to review CCTV. I did indeed walked out of my room.
30. Sweep a Broom or Pay in Blood
I was traveling around the world with my family when I was 12 we were at a hotel next to a monastery in Thailand. My sister went up to this crazy looking stone statue and when she walked back slipped hit her head on the stone floor and her head starts gushing. We went to a local hospital that was really sketchy and they sewed her head back together with some stitches.
Later that day, they had a small art exhibit at our hotel maybe 50 local artists. One painting showed a picture of the stone character – it said it was the God of something but said when walking to his shrine “sweep a broom behind you or pay in blood.” It was sooo creepy I will never forget.
31. The Not-Moving Iron Man
A few years ago, I blew a tire in the middle of Pennsylvania without a spare, bought a watermelon and went to check-in for the night. The B&B only took cash, had no Internet and no cell reception. The TV had 3 channels, and they were all eyes and static. For the entirety of my stay, there was an old man ironing sheets right outside my room.
Over the 6 hours of my stay I left room 4 times, and all 4 times there was the same man watching my room. He never moved or smiled, he just repeated the ironing motion and watched my room. He didn’t look at me, he just watched the door to my room all night. I ate a whole watermelon with just a spoon instead of sleeping. It was a really good watermelon.
32. A Call From a Mysterious Guy
I checked in to a hotel in Jackson, WY during a weekend getaway trip by myself; I didn’t really tell anyone I was visiting there since it was only a couple hours from where I was living at the time. I took a nap and was later woken up to a phone call. It was some guy claiming he noticed me at check-in and was wondering if I wanted to meet up with him! I was super freaked out since I didn’t notice anyone else at check-in in the office and with room doors going to the outside, I was scared to even leave the room thinking he may even be waiting outside my door.
After a quick peeks outside, I ran to the office and demanded to know what’s going on. They claim that the person called them, claimed to know me, so they forwarded to call to my room. I explain to them how scared I was now since I am alone and they apologize and moved me to a more secure room/suite. Luckily never ran into the person!
33. The Black Shadow, Confirmed!
My husband read reviews about our resort in Dominican and saw one about a Mother & her daughter seeing a black shadow figure in their room and claiming they didn’t drink alcohol so it wasn’t a hallucination etc. He never told me because he figured I’d get freaked out.
On the 4th night there, our son got up to use the washroom – slammed the door & woke me up. I looked towards the balcony and I saw a shadow person standing there. My husband asked what I was looking at, I said nothing, thought I saw someone standing there. He asked what I saw. I go – a black shadow kinda. He didn’t sleep the rest of the vacation.
34. The Loud Bang
Get checked in and go to our room, just a small space with a little mattress on the floor. It was above a restaurant and smelled like grease and food. We were tired and didn’t have any energy to find somewhere else. I wake up to a male and female fighting in French outside the window. My French was rusty so all I could decipher was it was a couple. Then I heard a massive bang and dead silence. It really sounded like a weapon shot. I sat there thinking I just heard a murder. After it was quiet except I heard someone running. Laying there I was in shock and scared.
Finally got the courage to go ask the front desk what was going on. Turned out it was just a large door that slammed and they do it every night. Never going back to that place.
35. Set Aside the Fear, Money Matters Most
I went to a hotel in South Haven, MI. with my girlfriend (at the time). We were in bed facing each other, and she suddenly got really pale and freaked out. She rolled over and I just ignored her because I was really tired and sleepy.
The next morning she goes, “There was a woman floating behind you, but I didn’t want to scare you, I thought I might be going nuts.” I was like, “really woman? I don’t wanna get killed by a ghost. Warn me next time!”
36. The Peeping Tom
Stayed at a B&B in Devon with my girlfriend. We were “getting busy” after a day at the beach when I heard a noise outside the door. I ran naked to the door and looked through the peephole to see someone staring back.
I motioned to the missus to throw me some clothes and by the time I’d slipped them on and opened the door, our peeping Tom was running down the stairs out of view. We spent the next morning at breakfast looking around the room and wondering who was attempting to spy on us. I never did find out.
37. The Creepy Cab Driver
I went to a hotel, request a room, and the front desk explained that they were all booked. They offered to arrange a cab to take me to one of their other chains across town and I obliged. The first part of the cab ride was just basic conversation, and then it turned creepy. The driver started to ask if I had a boyfriend and if I was going to be meeting anyone at the hotel. I noticed that we appeared to be driving away from the city and into a rural area with farmland. I asked him where we were going and he explained that he knew a short cut.
He proceeded to ask me what I would do if anyone attacked me. At this point, I was terrified and explained that I carry a big knife on me at all times (totally fake!) and that I wasn’t afraid to use it. Moments after this, he pulled a U-turn and took me to the hotel. I ran into the hotel and told the staff what happened, and spent the rest of the night with my door bolted shut with a chair against it. I creeped out my window and saw the cab driver outside. I was too scared but decided to sleep it off. I left the country early the next morning.
38. Night Terror
I stayed for one night at an inn on the southern coast in Maine. Quaint and tidy but also kind of old. I woke up in the middle of the night to see a dark figure lurking around the corner near the door. It was tall with long spindly arms like a tree. It started walking towards me. I couldn’t breathe and I had the impression that it was preventing me from taking in the air somehow. I am not religious and I don’t believe in ghosts. I woke up the next day truly honestly believing that a demon was in the room and I spent the next day reevaluating my worldview, completely shaken.
Then I looked it up and learned what sleep paralysis is. Everything checked out and it was so weird to see ancient accounts of the same experience I had. There are actually drawings from the Middle Ages of shadowy demons sitting on people’s chests. I have never experienced it before, just that night. I would never stay in that inn again.
39. The Ghost Pants
We were staying in a cheap hotel for one night where the door was very loud. If you moved it one bit you could hear it in every room on the floor. We forgot to lock the door when we went to sleep. The next day when we packed our things and wanted to leave we found one pair of pants that belonged to nobody. We are very sure it wasn’t there the day before and none of us has seen it before.
So apparently, someone came into our room while we were sleeping, put off their pants and left, without us hearing the extremely loud door. Or a ghost that lost his pants.
40. Fire? No worries, it’s Safe!
I arrive at a secluded, coastal hotel south of Marmaris Turkey around 2 AM. When the taxi pulls up to the hotel, it’s on fire. When the owner, standing out front sees us he opens the taxi door excitedly, “You come. I have a nice room for you!” I point out that the hotel is on fire but he simply gestures and says “Small fire. No problem. You come.” I. Am. Utterly. Exhausted. I find myself following the owner into the hotel, stepping over fire hoses, waving away smoke, passing firefighters as they run up and down a very nice staircase. We pause at the second-floor landing and the owner tells me, “See. Fire only on this side of the hotel. This side no fire. You come.” My exhaustion removes every ounce of common sense and I follow him to a room down the hall. The room is indeed fire-free. I quickly scan the in-case-of-fire message on the back of the door, checked the window escape, and promptly pass out with my gear and boots on.
In the morning I awake (alive) wondering if I dream the entire thing. I go down the smokey stairs past the charred another side of the hotel. The owner is so happy to see me (still alive) that he eats breakfast with me.
41. “Are you alone?”
I was staying at a hotel in Sydney, Australia with my girlfriend earlier this year. We were alone in our room at around 1 PM. There’s a knock at the door and she goes to open the door while I’m around the corner putting away laundry. Some guy steps in without asking and the first thing out of his mouth is ”Are you alone?”
Obviously, I walk over there to show that no, the 19-year-old girl is not alone. He says he’s from the reception and asks why we called last night. We haven’t called the reception so we tell him and he kinda just leaves. Really creeped me out when he asked if she was alone in the room, glad I was there.
42. Spiderbro is fine. Spiderfrat is a No-No.
In Mexico, my girlfriend and I stayed a night in a hut hotel near the jungle. No running water, no electricity. As we are from central Europe, we are not used to dangerous wildlife. There was a beautiful cenote nearby and at some point, it rained like crazy. The daytime was amazing. The night not so much.
In our hut was a bed with a mosquito net with huge holes in it. It was pitch black in the hut as we laid down and got comfortable trying to sleep. I felt a bit creeped out and decided to check the hut for insects with my phone’s flashlight. Bad idea. There were hundreds of big spiders all over the walls and ceiling. Not the nights’ sleep I had wrapped up like a mummy every piece of clothing we had with us.
43. The “Camera” TV Show
My family and I used to live in Thailand. When I was around 14, we had to go to Laos for a Visa renewal. We stayed at this big old hotel in the capital, Vientiane. It was a fancy-looking hotel, but as we sat in the lobby waiting for my dad to check us in we noticed that the place was completely empty. There were no other guests at all. We ate in the large dining room and we were the only people there. All of the staff were creepily attentive. It was like being in an abandoned hotel with ghost staff waiting on you.
The next day, my brother and I stayed at the hotel while my dad finished up our paperwork, we were flipping through the channels on the TV and we stopped on a channel that was showing a black and white picture like a security camera. We watched it for a bit and realized it was the hallway and the other channel was the front desk. Somehow the cameras were connected to the TVs.
44. Came Late, Left Early
Hostel in Geneva Switzerland. 6 of my friends and I took up all of the beds but one which was empty when we got there. We all went to bed thinking we had the room to ourselves. I woke up at about 3 am to a man around 40-50 years old coming in with his things and taking the final bunk. He ended up leaving, packing up everything at about 6 am. We thought he was just a late check-in with an early train. But it happened for 3 more nights and every time he completely packed up everything, didn’t use the last locker and folded up the bedding. He always came in very late at night and left really early in the morning.
Never found out what he was doing obviously but it creeped us out!
45. Dogs sensed the Supernatural
A year ago, I stayed at a hotel in rural Arkansas. I usually sleep with all lights off and even pull out the wires of the alarm clock to avoid the light. I woke up in the middle of the night and realized that the bathroom light was on. The tap was running and the shower too. I knew I couldn’t have forgotten that. Turned them off, turned off the light and went back to bed. I woke up after a couple of hours and saw that the lights are on in the bathroom, the tap was running and so was the shower again. The tub had clogged and water had started seeping out.
I was scared, left the room and walked down to the front desk. The manager and her dog were asleep. Both of them came back with me. I explained to her the whole thing and showed her the tub. She was flabbergasted. The dog came into the room and without any trigger started barking wildly in the bathroom. The lights went out in the bathroom while the rest of the room was still powered. Both of us sprinted out the room but the dog kept barking in the bathroom. Went back to the front desk and sat there for the rest of the night.
46. Hotel in the ’40s
A chalet in the state of Maine Vermont with three others. The lady at the “front desk” was approximately a billion years old with cloudy eyes and her “front desk” was a small table next to a recliner in a room full of knick knacks and china dolls. The actual room was what I imagine a hotel room in the ’40s would look like, and obviously, it had never been remodeled. The bathroom had a metal claw-foot tub.
The worst part, though, was the door at the back of the room. I assumed it would be another closet but we opened it and there was nothing but cold and darkness. We used the flashlight on our phones and discovered a dark, long, wide, cement-walled hallway with one old wooden chair. The night went smoothly and nothing ever happened but I still feel like we survived a night in a boring horror movie. I’ve tried to look for it again but with no results, I’ll have to ask my grandma who booked the trip.
47. She Wanted the Booze
I was in Rome for work, staying at the Forum Hotel. If anyone’s ever stayed there, you’ll know there are no screens in the large windows, just giant shutters and glass swing outs. I was on the second floor and passed out drunk after a long day. The Forum isn’t exactly on a busy road, but it’s overlooking one. I woke up to a crazy “YyyYyEeEeEeeee” screeching. There was an old woman hanging in my window, about waist high, trying to snatch my bottle of booze off my vanity.
I have no idea how she scaled the wall. I screamed, she screamed back and disappeared from view. I hear a thump on the cobblestones, poke my head out, and she’s gone.
48. The Creep Tickler Guy
When I was 12, my family took a vacation to Europe. At our hotel in Rome, there was this amazing indoor pool, and being a child of my age, I would have spent the entire vacation there if I could. During one such swimming excursion, some random gentleman, I think probably around 40-something, comes over to me and starts tickling my feet.
My mother is with me but is preoccupied with one of my other siblings. He speaks English as well and starts teasing me for being ticklish and telling me how I’m “simply adorable.” Through my giggles, I keep shyly asking him to stop. He doesn’t and just keeps teasing me and touching my feet and lower legs. This went on for maybe 2 minutes tops before my mom sees what’s happening and goes into super protective mode and tells him to back off.
49. Oh My Golly GAS!
Found a hotel in Yangon the day we got there for pretty cheap. They mentioned the rates were low because maintenance was being done on several floors. We sleep fine, wake up and head to breakfast. At breakfast, we met some Germans who had also stayed the night in our hotel. They said they had not slept well because during the middle of the night someone woke them up to move them from the floor they were on.
We found out later that they had been moved because they were on one of the levels reserved for maintenance, and part of the maintenance included gassing the rooms for bugs. During the middle of the night, they were just going around the rooms shoving the gas nozzle or whatever under the doors and letting them run; suffocated the two people next to the Germans before they realized they’d accidentally booked people on that floor.
50. Blood Stains and Holes
I arrived late at a hotel for a business trip. The flight had a malfunction so we had to land. They fixed it on the tarmac & we never deplaned. I already wasn’t happy with all the delays & I wasn’t going anywhere. The event I was there for was in their hotel. I wanted my room. I was polite but resolutely firm. They did some scrambling and asked if I would consider a damaged room under construction. “As long as the sheets are clean so I can go to bed, I don’t care.” was my reply. Mistake.
The room they gave me was literally a crime scene. The case had been closed so there was no legal issue to contend with but someone had been nearly killed in that room. They had primed over the bloodstains on the walls & ceiling but had only taped down semi-clear plastic over the pooled blood on the carpets. Multiple small holes in the walls had obviously been patched & sanded but there were multiple small holes in the walls. They gave me a completely new bed and TV from on-site inventory so I was comfortable but, man, it was creepy.
